An associate member of
the Texas Press Association, Carmen’s column, Texas
Dames™ appears in a number of Texas’ community newspapers.
Newspapers subscribing to the weekly column of Texas women who’ve
charted new paths here also receive a complimentary seminar for
their staffs and correspondents. Texas Dames™ tells the
stories of Texas women who’ve pioneered—not just in settling the
land—but also in business, education, the arts, medicine,
engineering, science and community service.
The TCU Journalism graduate returned to her roots in
2006, teaching Media Writing in the Schieffer School of Journalism
for her alma mater. Today’s Texas Dames™ scribe reported
and wrote about schools and federal courts, city councils and state
prisons, play and book reviews, airline and union battles. Her
investigative reporting led to statewide awards and to syndication
with Scripps-Howard News Service. She continues her
membership in the Investigative Reporters & Editors association and
the Society of Professional Journalists.
Her newspaper career started on Texas weeklies around
Fort Worth and dailies in Brownwood, Midland and Odessa. Her
reporting career continued through Fort Worth, Dallas and Houston
metropolitan dailies before wooed to the political arena with a
Texas Congressman.
After stints in political and corporate speech writing, and
business, she returned to journalism, this time freelancing. She’s
written and reported for newspapers like the Fort Worth Star
Telegram—op-ed
articles, book reviews and a column—and Texas business stories for
The New York Times.

Editors & Publishers at the
Annual Texas Press Association Trade Show & Convention browsed through
the tales of Texas' newest column about women who've made a difference
in their communities and the state--Texas Dames.
